Noooo Year Thhhaaaiimmm!!!

Woo-Hoo!Finally!The year has come to an end.Just a week back i was wondering what to do since its New Year's Eve.Everybody wants to do something 'different and new'(Ya Ya..Yawn:)..but what?!..they themselves don't have a clue(just like me)!But then i realised that the best thing to do on such occasions is to just lie down and rewind your life 365 days back.
I was out for a dinner with my family, the First difference is that this time my brother is not here..God..I miss him on such occasions.I love teasing him, irritating him, jumping on him, running around him (constantly!) and all that jazz. The Second difference is that i tried baking cookies this time,u know, like the one's which are crunchy and then they melt in your mouth.Unfortunately,my cake baking skills came into play and i ended up making a chocolate cake.Nevertheless,we will be using it to cut it at 12am!Now that's what we Indians call as 'Jugaad'.Come to think of it,we are actually very good at this!
The Third Difference that this year has brought along is that i have realised how people change, for the good or the worse, doesnt matter. But in the process you change too.And that is not a bad thing people! It infact makes multiple personalities out of you and then you slowly master the art of 'handling' people(MuHaHaHaHa!)Because i have increasingly noticed that most of us behave in a certain way with one person and drastically different from the other.Guess all this is part of the process of what is popularly known as 'maturing'(Isn't it,eh?)
The Fourth Big Difference that came along towards the end of the year was that i understood the value that a grandparent plays in one's life.He taught me how to study biology in the simplest way ever!If i scored well in that subject in my 10th grade its all thanks to him.I swear! But as they say people come and go but what matters is the difference they have made in yor life.He constantly inspires me till this very day and would always be an integral part of my life.Today,I sit back and remember him as he watches us from somewhere, showering his unconditional blessings and love.Happy New Year Babaji..

How REAL are REALity shows?

Call a few auditions, invite elite judges, declare attractive prizes and Boom! You have a reality show up for telecast. As reality shows are marching hand in hand with soap operas on TRP's;they have become a routine part of our lives.Reality shows cater to a larger section of the society.A family sits together to watch their favourite contestant perform and have discussions over dinner about who they prefer to win or who should be eliminated next.It is a means of bringing together various opinions and integrating them to form one trophy holder. As a platform that caters early success, these shows give direct entry into the 'Big Bad world of Bollywood' and brings fame to the aspiring youth of our country. An attractive package of fighting judges, hoping artists and some 'mirch-masala' lures a number of advertisers to promote their products.Voila! What a thoughtful way of minting money eh?
To conclude, whether these shows are scripted or not, still remains debatable, but the fact that they promote talent, spirit of healthy competition and brings together diverse cults cannot be avoided.

Happy Birthday Radio!

Yes people!Today is the birthday of our very dear friend-Radio!Always reliable, always chirping and always bubbling with energy;its radio's 119th birthday!Hurray!Whenever you are feeling a little low you just have to tune into your radio sets(well its now available in phones also:)and refresh or recharge yourself! Its a unique blend of information and entertainment and most importantly has the ability to bring back memories from the 'good old days',thanks to the songs they play. The vital characteristic of Mr.Radio is that he does not demand attention. You can listen to it while you are driving to office, cooking in the kitchen, ironing your clothes or maybe, even while taking a bath. Thanks to Sir Thomas Edison that this beautiful invention has become a part of our daily dose of entertainment but sadly its value is deteriorating.

All India Radio, popularly AIR was established way back in 1930.At that time,a license was required to listen to the radio as prescribed by the British government.Post-Independence,this broadcasting organisation came under the Ministry of Telecom and Labour.A lot of detailed discussion were carried out whether to name it as AIR or Aakashwani.Although the first priority was Aakashwani,it was feared that it might get mispronounced in the society;so All-India-Radio was finally decided upon,as its initials fitted in perfectly.Well that was long time back but now there are more than 300 stations across the country.

I got the opportunity to visit Aakashwani Hyderabad where we were briefed about the various departments of the unit and the different shows that go on air.It was in fact an amazing experience to know how scripts are drafted, shows scheduled 3 months in advance and the critical role that every personnel plays in the making of one simple show.Show formats range from the usual music, skits, documentaries, quizzes, countdowns, etc to specific ones for families, women, industries, children, farmers, devotees, youth and ofcourse the news savvy.Radio production involves three major stages of planning, production and execution.AIR gives 510+ news bulletins in 52 hours and 82 languages, the 1st of which was aired from the then Bombay station on 23rd July 1927.
The latest development is the Digital Radio Transmission, established 16th January 2009,that involves significant improvement in the reception and coverage of AIR programmes.

I conclude with the hope that we soon realise that Radio is the most effective form of communication and entertainment.Lets not forget its role during emergencies and natural calamities.Long Live Radio!(Information Courtesy:Mr.Raja Rao,Station Director,Aakashwani,Hyderabad)

From Candlelight to Satellite

'Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.'History has given us what the future would never be able to give us.These days where the crippled, disabled, old people, widows and orphans are considered as 'economical burdens';there is no value left for real love and affection.Every aspect is monetarily weighed.Life has become like a profit and loss statement;where each man wishes to debit more and more money but credits nothing and nobody for it.Sometimes while self-evaluating,we have to trace the immediate past, just like a doctor asks a patient about the history of his ailment. This analysis helps us identify the various forces that drive our actions and to assist us in rediscovering ourselves.
The Past or the early days of man on Earth was substantially different from the present. There was no religion, language, script, transportation facilities and no set of rules and regulations to be followed or preached. It was a nomadic wandering life of self-discovery.Slowly,man discovered fire, invented wheel, settled down on the riverside, and hence civilizations came into being. It was a community life. The harvest from agriculture was shared and land was equally distributed. But when European nations started a race for colonies, they broke the equality that existed among us.Industries took a superior form and left the people unemployed to an extent of acute poverty. It gave birth to slums where there was mass consumption but no purchasing power.Nuclear families came into existence. They began to desert the maimed, the retired and the physically handicapped. This in turn led to the setting up of Social Service Organisations.
Technology, indeed, has made a man's life easy but what became easy and unnecessary were values of family, bonding, togetherness and most importantly love.At the end of the day it is upto each one of us to learn from the past, love in the present and understand the future,at the same time not compromise our moral values.

A Visual Diary

(Try listening to it from someone and visualize it with your eyes closed/Read it real slow)

1)As strings of hair blocked my view,I tucked it behind my ear.Slow breeze was whistling through my hair.I climbed up the stairs and moved towards the terrace taking small steps one after the other.Clouds were humming in unison to bestow on us its mighty strength.I suddenly felt something on my skin,a rain drop;and then another and another. And in a few seconds, the roof glowed into a darkened shade.Strings of water created a curtain around me.I started to feel his music..within.I opened my arms to welcome his rhythm into my soul.I stood there to let him wash away my sorrows,my pain,my agony.I smiled as my tears were washed away along with the rain...

2)Standing outside the huge door of the stadium dressed in glittering costumes,I stood there nervous as ever.We were to perform at the World Military Games.I was surrounded by smiles as we rehearsed our steps. As the guards heard the signal on their walkie-talkie,they opened the gate.Thousands of people were cheering in unison, like group of bees humming a song.Flashes of light shimmered into my eye and I could feel the drum beats rush through my adrenaline. It was my day..

Memoirs of Mandela-Global Icon shares his 27 prison years

Two decades of freedom cannot compensate for the 27 years that Nelson Mandela spent in jail.Years of heartache, loneliness and pain of being away from the family, have been captured in his memoir, that was released in October this year. The iconic leader was sent to jail for opposing apartheid in South Africa and was released in 1990.
This new collection reveals the private man behind him,who made tremendous personal sacrifices for the cause he believed in.It also has the notes and letters which he copied into notebooks during his time in prison. They not only reveal his concern about being portrayed as a saint, but also his feelings of helplessness when his mother Winnie Mandela was detained by the police. In a letter to his two daughters,he wrote,'For long you may live like orphans without your own home and parents, without natural love, affection and protection mummy used to give you'(Aww..).Most of the notes and letters were actually confiscated by authorities at that time, but was later returned to him by a former security officer. In this compilation,we come across the agony he felt of being unable to help his followers.'I feel i have been soaked in gall, every part of me,my flesh, bloodstream, bone and soul,so bitter am i to be completely powerless to help you.'Nelson Mandela, who is presently residing in South Africa,is now 92 years old and rarely makes public appearances now.( I so wanna meet him!)

Media Sensationalism-So who finally killed Aarushi?

The most powerful weapon in the hands of a democracy is its media. The ability to disseminate information in a jiffy makes it a lucrative sector. It is supposed to act as the voice of the people and give a true, unbiased, uncoloured perspective of the event and not affect the opinions that are made in the society.
But,sometimes, unfortunately incidents like Aarushi murder case forces us to think how ethical today's media is. Unnecessary penetration into the life of a person and holding him/her responsible for an act of brutality defames the person in front of the whole nation.People tend to look upon him/her as a disgrace to the country.(at least that was the case with me). That is the power of media. It can make you, it can destroy you.
Now,when we know the pros and cons of the media, how much responsibility lies on its shoulders?Well, there is something called 'look before you leap'.This is what every media personnel be doing before jumping into conclusions and blowing it out of proportion, which is not only uncalled for but also unnecessary.Media should aim to carefully examine, research, question, analyse and interpret each and every story it covers.
What we see these days is that every channel, every newspaper and every media organisation is fighting for popularity and credibility.Competition is good,of course, but only till the game is played well.Media should inculcate a sense of rational approach while reporting events to its public.By sensationalising they are almost crossing the border and being insensitive towards the people associated with it.At the same time they are confusing those who follow media regularly. It shouldn't be forgotten that along with responsibility comes accountability. With this,i wish to convey that yes,i accept media sensationalises news and events but that can be changed and it will..because there are still people who are doing their best to report the truth and nothing but the truth. And so,i would always be for media, pro media and with media!(It all means the same i know:)

Sulabh International-A step closer towards eradicating manual scavengers

Finally the manual scavengers have their own voice.Sulabh International,a social service organisation found in 1970,works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation,non-conventional sources of energy,waste-management and social reforms through education.
One of the biggest NGO's in India,am simply in awe of it.It was founded by Padmabhushan Bindeshwar Pathak,a sociologist who has received esteemed awards at both Indian and International levels for his works with the organisation. This man is simply one of a kind.He truly inspires me.I mean,he has like 50,000 volunteers working with him and they all believe in one thing-Sanitation is Dharma(religion) and Human Development is the thought of karma and spirituality.(We don't clean our toilets with these thoughts for sure!)Its the biggest problem in our country,as we prefer to do our business in public and leave it for someone ELSE to clean it.
An innovator, observer and sensitive man,Bindeshwar Pathak has made effective use of bio-gas creation by linking the Sulabh toilets to fermentation plants. This design, made 3 decades ago,is now a byword for sanitation in developing countries all over the world. The distinctive feature of this project lies in the fact that besides producing odour-free bio-gas,it also releases clean water rich in organic manure.Sulabh movement ensures cleanliness and prevents green-house gas emissions, making it a pioneer in low-cost sanitation in the world.Amazing isn't it?
The beginning of Sulabh Shauchalaya was marked with the designing of a flush toilet which functioned without being connected to the sewage system.(I don't like people who think of ideas before me:)"Its important to bring about sensitivity and sensibility among the people.Lack of sanitation and hygiene is a national health hazard",says Dr.Bindeshwar Pathak...so true!I seriously feel that the subject of toilets is much more important than any other social cause.

Media and its Business with Children

Media caters to the children spread across the world. It gives them cartoons to watch(if they have a TV),information related to their homework(if they go to school); and knowledge(if they think of picking up a newspaper). So,media is providing a lot of avenues for children but how accessible are they? That in itself is a 'business.'
If a child is privileged enough to access the print or electronic media, how much of their time is actually utilised? Its a story of every modern-day household, where at 5 in the evening the mother is literally begging the child to drink milk while they are busy getting ready to set their play-stations for the day.It is here when 'Doraemon','Chota Bheem' and 'Pokemon' comes to the rescue! The child finishes the milk in a jiffy!Well..that again helps the dairy business!
Talking about how qualitatively a child takes in the content of media depends upon how the parents channelise them into interpreting it.If an advertisement shows that by sporting a cartooned bag makes the child popular among his/her classmates, its consequential that the child would raise a thought to fulfil his/her need...well..who doesn't want to be popular..eh?But if every time the child repeats the action of forcing to fulfil a certain need,be it a bag, shoes or even toothpaste,it becomes vital for the parents to understand the child's psychology and teach him the value of things first then later money. If that doesn't happen it would definitely become a business-producing high-headed arrogant kids.
Talking about reality shows that give a platform to youngsters to showcase their talent;in my opinion and many others-if the child is not in school-its child labour(According to Child Labour Act,2005,Any child below 14years should be in school).Talent is not running away..but time is.If they are taught marketing gimmicks and made to exercise their talents to the extreme-well that's not a substitute for school-that's business!(No wonder they call it 'Talent School'..whatever that means:).So its better if children are sitting on their benches discovering the world outside with just a pair of eyes or two(if the teacher is spectacled..haha..bad joke..i know)looking at them rather than making them look like robots with make-up and remote-controlled expressions standing in the spot light with crores of eyes staring at them.

Media-Its Challenges in India

As we all know our media industry is booming at a fast rate and is comparatively younger to that of the western countries. Its challenges varies according to the fields it caters to.When we talk about the urban media approaching the rural sectors, not many people there would be willing to cooperate with them.Sometimes,it becomes a sensitive issue approaching a sector where people are not accustomed to cameramen and journalists enquiring about their lives or related incidents. That again, limits the horizons of the urban media which is constantly trying to cover the rural pockets of the country.Which is why probably 'alternate media' is more successful as it is run by the people themselves.

Talking about the field of politics, given the influence that the government operates on media(as we are slowly coming to know more and more about:),it tends to dilute the power of the medium and its ability to report the truth. The latest trend being 'paid news' which highlights the commercial aspect of this industry. At the same time bringing forth how corruption is seeping into media itself.(as if nothing else was left!)

The biggest challenge however, lies in how media is criticised when they want to bring out the naked truth in front the people,be it a celebrity,a politician or even a common man.All the media houses get to hear is "why do you want to know?'What they fail to understand is that by virtue of being a democratic economy, everybody has the freedom to express, including the media. Also, the social personalities are always cribbing about how much the media twists and turns their words and make a juicy 30minute show out of it.Well, they are a part of the society and their actions are accountable for.We are the ones who make them and they turn around to question why we are interfering in their 'personal' lives. They are ones who have chosen the profession-not us.Their profession has no personal dimension as such.It is the publicity they have got from us that they are 'celebrities'!!

Well, although media faces a lot of challenges but at the end of the day this is not 'Satyug'..for all those who think that am pro-media..ofcourse I am!But that doesn't mean that it is as pure as gold.It has its own ways of attracting attention, generating revenues and all which might not be the optimal method to project information. However, media has a long way to go!Long live media!Hope there are no more of Radia tapesPlease!

Bhopal Gas Tragedy-Forgotten?.. Already?

3rd December 1984, a day that changed the lives of thousands of people in Bhopal, a day that left a deep scar on the history of our country, a day that literally slapped the political system of India.

The aftermaths and its blame-game continued as people looked upon in anticipation for appropriate justice.Media, on the other hand, was busy gauging each and every perspective to bring forth the truth in front of the people.Amidst all this, what could have the media possibly done to bring justice for the people?

Media should have been given a leverage to investigate into the case as the media organisations are proving to be well-equipped with a better network at a faster speed! But this again seemed like a far-sighted approach. But what was possible was that that all the media houses could have come together to become a strengthened voice of the people and pushed the government to increase the relief amount towards the victims.Whether by ads or public rallies,it could have made sure that these funds actually reached each and every household of the deceased and victimised

Whatever be the case one fact remains-media has both the power and the technology to bring about a change in a democratic country like ours, provided its opinions and proposals are taken seriously by the authority in power.

Where is Wiki going to take us?

The electronic cat and mouse chase has just begun..the promoters of freedom of press are now caught in their own web because they have nowhere to go..the big winner here is Israel,as it turns out, has the least interest in bombing Iran's nuclear facilities as compared to most of the other Arab states. But the big loser here is American diplomacy as in the name of being a "guide and support" to the nations across the globe, they have actually played games in disguise.Their double standards have been exposed..finally.

They are the ones who take pride in being the owners of mass media technology across the globe..but see what an irony it is!Now,they are the ones running away from the same and having the audacity to actually shut down agencies which are working towards exposing corrupt officials in the public sphere.

I hope the next Wikileak is about India so that people come to know the nasty truth behind the corrupt system and the corrupt. It would be exciting to watch the politcians find their way in the next elections and thinking twice before seeking public support!Let me pray for the better future..for the better India!!
